In the earliest version of the arrival on the borders of Canaan Moses doesn’t die, he lives, having conquered the land of Canaan, which for this kernel is the northeastern bank of the Jordan. The account this kernel tells actually ends with Balaam prophesizing their ultimate conquest of Moab, and much more territory besides. On the Borders of Canaan traces the development of this uniquely divergent account and its slow development into the canonical text we have today.
